The Photography Smiths bio picture
  • Hello!

    The Photography Smiths consist of husband/wife photographers Mikey and Samantha Smith.

    We think moments shouldn’t just be captured, they should be handcrafted. And while we’re not great with words, we believe in the power of images to tell our story, and if you’d like, they can tell yours too.

    Thank you for taking the time to stop by our blog. Here you can find some of our favorite work and personal adventures along the way.

    Available for travel worldwide :).

10 at 10 {A Monday Blog}

So I kinda of been slacking on the blogging for the last few weeks! We were consisting blogging at least 3 days a week but after going to United I fell behind. Last night I started thinking and decided to do a random blog just so you could see everything on my mind! Every Monday I will just post 10 random statements. These are just things on my mind, recap of the weekend and whats coming up! I hope you LOVE it:)

1. I love Mondays! Since I usually work all weekend – Mondays Cohen goes to speech and then we have the rest of the day to spend with each other.

2. My birthday is coming up and I’m kinda dreading it.

3. Because I love getting older said no one ever.

4. This weekend was spectacular! Shot a session at Saturday morning, drove up to DC to taken Cohen to the circus then came back to shoot another session!

5. We tried to see that new kids movie The Croods but Cohen fell asleep 5 minutes in so we decided to leave.

6. This weather is crazy! I’m pretty sure it made Cohen sick! Almost 60s on Saturday and now it’s sleeting.

7. I honestly love snow though and wish we would of got at least one serious snow storm with at least a foot!

8. Last week I posted on FB how I needed a more effective form of punishment for Cohen because timeout was no longer works. A lot of friends suggested taking thing he loved away and it working! Too bad he also learned if he gives me a big hug and a few kisses he gets them back …..I know I know.

9. The Cherry Blossoms will be blooming soon and it’s my favorite time of year!

10. The 2014 senior experience model search is coming!!!!!!!

When I dream of the perfect location to shoot at this would be it. On the top of a mountain with tons of different textures and a whole lot of yummy California sun. There were soo many talented models and their outfits where styled perfectly! This shoot was one of the highlights of our whole trip!!!

Enjoy some of our favorites!!!

The Bridal Series {Trash the Dress Workshop}

When we originally decided to do this mini series it was going to be a short one month project to capture what I love. I seriously LOVE concept shoots and being able to say I dreamed this up then shot it is absolutely amazing! So what turned into a one month project turned into a two month project and is now going on its third month! My heart is literally singing! Well I am happy to announce we will not be retiring this series!!! Though there won’t be a weekly feature anymore but maybe a feature each month! With that said I am happy to share some of our favorite images from the Trash the Dress Workshop in Santa Barbara !!!

Last week Mikey and I were in Santa Barbara for an amazing conference called United that was hosted by Showit! We have been members of Showit since day one of our business. Not only are they an amazing company but they also have an amazing community that comes with it! United is all about learning from one other and connecting. When we were asked to help put together a concept/style shoot of our own to help others learn and grow from – Mikey and I jumped at the chance!!! I feel like we have a lot of strengths when it comes to our style of shooting but shooting straight into the sun and posing are some of my greatest strengths.

Originally, we opened the class to only 10 people – I personally have been to shoots where there were way too many people and not one could get any good shots! I didn’t want this to happen but I couldn’t say no to all the others who wanted to come but couldn’t get in. So we went from 10 to 30:)and I can honestly say from everything I heard and all the amazing shots I have seen everyone was able to get what they wanted!!! Whew, I’m not going to lie I was a little nervous about teaching sooo many photographers but my heart was so happy seeing everyone so exited!

Our model Crystal did an amazing job! We actually went to school together and she moved out west right after high school. I can not thank her enough for making the long drive to Santa Barbara !!! Her dress is seriously one of the most gorgeous ones I have ever seen and her natural modeling skills were UNREAL! She seriously rocked it and was amazing to give each person her model face! And let me tell you ….she was freezing! Yet – you can not tell! When you think California you think sunny, 70s and warm ……no its cold!! I think that morning it was about 40 degrees!! But Crystal rocked it!!!

Enjoy our favorites from the Trash the Dress Workshop!!!

xoxo

Samantha

Carl + Crystal {Beloved Portraits}

Last week still feels like a dream. I’m not even sure where to start.

Mikey and I flew out to Santa Barbara, CA for a photography conference.

But a few weeks before we left I made a status that said I just love how my news feed was filled with my photos! Seeing this seriously makes my heart sooo happy! Crystal made the comment though that she didn’t have a photo by me to use. Since she lived all the way out in California there was nothing I could really do unless she came to visit us in Virginia but then I started thinking…..We were going to be in California and we needed a model for our shoot Mikey and I were leading. The shoot would be a sunrise trash the dress and it just soo happen Crystal just got married and had an AMAZING dress!! So I wrote her right away and begged her to be our model even though she lived ummmm 4-5 hours away she agreed!!! I still can not thank her enough!! Not only did her and Carl have to take off work but they also had to find somewhere to stay then wake up at 4 am to get ready!

The only way I could think of to pay her back was a Beloved session. These are portraits for married couples who want to continue documenting their love through images. Just because your married doesn’t mean you can’t have more beautiful portraits! Carl and Crystal’s love is just so real and pure. These two have just soo much soul and depth to them. Carl made the comment that he wasn’t a model and never really had portraits done before but man oh man I beg to differ! Wait till you see how beautiful these two are together!!!

Enjoy our California Beloved Portraits!

xoxo,

Samantha

The Bridal Series {The Burtonesque Bride}

Of course I saved a spot for this shoot in The Bridal Series!!! This style shoot was put together by the VERY talented Amanda Veronee of Anthomanic!  Also, it was also recently featured on Rock N Roll Bride!!!

The theme was a Burtonesque – a play on the creative world of Tim Burton. From the oreo cookies with milk to the gorgeous flower arrangements this shoot was sooo much fun! It may not look but it was soo humid and hot that day!! You would never know that we were shooting in a field that was infested with sooo many mosquitoes but Amanda and her handsome husband rocked it!

I don’t think we could of had a better team of businesses to work with!!!

Here’s a complete list of all the awesome vendors!
